Toppers Go Low To Beat Teutopolis


After three tournaments to start the season, the Hillsboro boys golf team had their first nine-hole match of the season on Thursday, Aug. 19, as they took on Teutopolis at Cardinal Golf Course in Effingham.

The Toppers were steady and successful in the match, with five players shooting between 42 and 47 for a 173-192 win over the Wooden Shoes.

Dominic Haggard and Dillon Smail would be two of those five within 11 strokes of par as they shot matching 6-over-par 42s to share medalist honors.

Drake Vogel would be just behind his teammates with a 43, while Preston Lyerla added a 46, giving Hillsboro four of the top five scores, with Teutopolis’ Gabe Schlink tying Lyerla for fourth.

Tycen Thacker continued his strong start to the season with a 47, while Austin Loskot and Dylan Titsworth added a 55 and a 62.

Hillsboro will play in Springfield at The Rail on Tuesday, Aug. 24, with Litchfield and Williamsville also in attendance.
