Toppers Finish Out Abe's Rumble With Win

Posted

After a rough start to the 58-team Abe’s Rumble dual team tournament in Springfield on Wednesday, Dec. 29, the Hillsboro High School wrestling team rebounded and ended their time in Springfield on a high note.

The Toppers went 0-4 in their pool on day one, which sent them to the nine-team Copper Bracket for the second day of the event. From there, Hillsboro won three of their four matches, including their last one, which gave them third place in the bracket.

Hillsboro opened up with Prairie Central and fell 39-30 to the Hawks, giving up 12 points in forfeits and winning three matches by forfeit.

Zander Wells and Magnus Wells both picked up wins by fall, with Zander winning in 26 seconds at 152-pounds and Magnus winning in 49 seconds at 220 pounds.

Next up was Newman Central Catholic, who defeated the Toppers 54-18, with 12 forfeit points for the Sterling-based private school and 12 for Hillsboro. Hillsboro also picked up a win at 220 pounds, with Magnus Wells picking up his second pin of the day.

Hillsboro’s closest match of day one was against Cumberland, with the Pirates winning 36-30. The Toppers forfeited one weight class, while Cumberland gave up four weight classes. Zander Wells won his second match by fall at 152 pounds for Hillsboro’s other six points.

The Toppers’ final match in their pool was against Camp Point Central, who won 54-24. Central received 18 points from three Hillsboro forfeits, while the Toppers picked up 12 forfeit points.

Magnus Wells earned his third pin of the day, all of which came in the first period, while Shay Westhoff also picked up a first period pin at 138 pounds.

Hillsboro’s run at the Copper Bracket started with a quick match against Walther Christian Academy. All 42 of Hillsboro’s points in their 42-28 win over the Melrose Park private school came by forfeit.

The Toppers’ only loss in the bracket came against Olympia, who went on to win the nine-team mini-tourney. Hillsboro gave up 18 forfeit points and got a forfeit win from Ian Malloy at 285 pounds in the 52-24 loss to the Spartans.

Matt Page picked up his first pin of the tournament, beating Devyn Porzelius in the 145-pound match with 13 seconds to go in the first period. Zander Wells and Magnus Wells also picked up wins by fall in the match.

Hillsboro rebounded from the loss with a 42-24 win over Willmington, giving up six points in a forfeit and getting 24 back on four weight classes the Wildcats couldn’t fill.

Keegan Murray (120) and  Austin Newingham (132) both got their first pins of the tournament, while Zander Wells picked up his fourth.

His fifth pin of the day would be a big one as Wells beat Cody Martin of Sparta to clinch third for the Hiltoppers in a 36-30 bout.

Hillsboro gave up 18 points due to forfeits, compared to one forfeit for the Spartans (three classes were double forfeits). The Toppers’ edge came in contested matches, where they went 5-2 with five pins.

In addition to Zander Wells’ fifth win by fall, Gaven Vollintine (120), Keegan Murray (126) and Reese Morford (182) also picked up pins. Magnus Wells also earned his fifth pin of the tournament, improving his two-day record to 8-0.

Combined, the Wells brothers would go 14-2, with 10 pins and four forfeit victories. Both Ian Malloy and Reese Morford had five wins, while Matt Page and Keegan Murray had four wins each. Austin Newingham, Melissa Bell, Ben Huber and Shay Westhoff finished out the line-up for Coach Garrett Young, winning two matches each.

All told, Hillsboro would have 40 individual wins in their eight duals, 16 of which came by fall. More importantly than the wins and losses is that the team was able to go up against quality competition that will prepare them for the rigors of the postseason.

The next step on that journey is Saturday, Jan. 8, when Hillsboro competes in the Hawk Wrestling Classic at Prairie Central High School in Fairbury.
