Toppers 8th At Grace-Filled Tourney

Posted

The Hillsboro High School volleyball team more than doubled previous win total and finished eight out of 16 teams at this year’s Montgomery County Invitational on Sept. 10-11.

The Toppers, this year’s co-hosts with Lincolnwood, opened up play on their home court in the Grace Pool, named after the late Grace Herschelman, who passed away from infantile neuroaxonal dystrophy (INAD) in May. The event, dubbed a Grace-Filled Tourney, raises money for INAD research, scholarships in Herschelman’s name and Make-A-Wish Illinois.

Hillsboro had a tough task in their opening game as they fell to future South Central Conference foe North Mac 25-20, 25-11. The Panthers proved to be difficult for other opponents too, as they finished third overall.

Game two would be against Edinburg, who defeated Father McGivney in the second game of pool play 25-23, 25-20. The Wildcats put up a fight against the Toppers too, but Hillsboro prevailed with a 26-24, 25-19 win.

North Mac improved to 2-0 with a 25-15, 25-20 win over Father McGivney in the next game, meaning that the Griffins had to beat Hillsboro to avoid the shutout in pool play.

The Toppers seemed to shut that down quickly with a 25-15 win in game one, but Father McGivney rallied to win 25-22 in game two and send it to a deciding third game. In a back-and-forth affair, the Toppers escaped with a 15-13 win and earned a spot in the Silver Flight.

North Mac finished pool play undefeated , but it wasn’t easy as they lost game one to Edinburg 25-21, before coming back with 25-8 and 15-5 wins to sew up the Gold Flight berth. The losses in their final games moved Edinburg and McGivney to the Copper and Bronze Flights respectively.

Silver Flight

As good as day one went, success on day two wasn’t in the cards for the orange and black. Taking on St. Elmo-Brownstown in game one, Hillsboro lost a heartbreaker 25-20, 25-17, which put them in the seventh place game against South County, who fell to Roxana 25-20, 25-20.

Playing in their sixth game in three days, Hillsboro fell to the Vipers 25-12, 25-14 as the Franklin-Waverly co-op team picked up seventh. Roxana went on to beat St. Elmo-Brownstown in the other Silver Flight contest, winning 25-16, 25-12 to capture fifth.

Hillsboro will see a familiar face on Monday, Sept. 13, as they host Father McGivney in a pool play rematch at the Hillsboro High School gym.
