The Montgomery County Bicentennial 50-year time capsule will soon be sealed, with plans to open the contents in the year 2071. There will be a brief ceremony at Oak Grove Cemetery in Hillsboro on Sunday, Nov. 28, at 2:00 p.m. when the individual containers will all be sealed in a crypt at the cemetery’s mausoleum.
All municipalities within the county are encouraged to contribute to the time capsule at no charge, and some have already been received. When completed, they can be picked up or dropped off at the City Hall in Hillsboro. Sample items for submission could include a menu with current prices, newspaper articles and/or advertisements, a key to the city, current photos of people or structures, a graduation program or tassel, business pens or other mementos, a church bulletin, pandemic-related items such as a mask, or any item from 2021 that would be interesting to see in the year 2071.
Containers are still available, courtesy of Todd and Lora Dean. Any individual, organization, business, church, etc., is also welcome to be part of the time capsule for a fee of $10 (to be donated to the mausoleum).
For a container or questions, contact Patty Whitworth at 217-246-2806.
