The College Report: Atkins Brothers Compete

If there is a way to point out the strength of the Greenville University Cross Country team, it is simply this: Hillsboro graduates Isaiah Atkins and Elijah Atkins were not part of the varsity scoring at the Greenville Cross Country Invitational.

And both of those former Hiltoppers are breaking 30 minutes for 8,000-meters. At the home invitational, which was held at the Hillsboro Cross Country Club in Hillsboro, Isaiah Atkins took 28th in 28 minutes, 38.47 seconds.

Elijah Atkins finished the race in 29:26.68, which was good for 41st. Greenville would win the meet by three points. They scored 38 points. Heartland Community College took second with 41 points.

Alex White (Hillsboro), a Parkland College golfer, shot a 149 at Weibring Challenge, which was hosted by Illinois Valley Community College and held at the Weibring Golf Club in Normal. White opened with a low round of 71 and shot a 78 in the second and final round. He helped Parkland take first with a 580. Heartland Community College took second in 585.

Trevor Geggie (Litchfield) rushed for 50 yards on seven carries to help Knox College shutout Beloit College 42-0. Knox is 1-3 both overall and in the Midwest Conference.

Becky Painter (Litchfield) and Jordan Ramey (Litchfield) had a chance to play against each other recently as Painter’s school, Parkland College, lost a 2-1 battle to Ramey’s chosen school, Lincoln Land Community College in women’s soccer. Painter spent 90 minutes in goal and made 10 saves. He allowed two goals. Ramey started on defense for LLCC and did not have any stats.

With the loss, Parkland slipped to 3-8 overall and 1-4 in the Mid-West Athletic Conference. LLCC is 2-7-2 overall and 1-3-1 in the MWAC.

Dane Huber (Hillsboro), an Illinois College golfer, finished 26th at the Purple and Gold Classic, which was held at Soangetaha Country Club in Galesburg and hosted by Knox. Huber shot a 79 in the opening round and an 84 in the second and final round. IC and Carl Sandburg Community College tied for second with a 615. Knox won with a 596.

Cara Pence (Litchfield) had eight assists and two block assists as her college team, North Central University, lost a 3-2 battle to Finlandia University in a non-conference match. North Central is 5-10 overall and 2-3 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference.

Lexi Throne (Litchfield) took 204th at the University of Alabama-Huntsville hosted Charger Cross Country Invitational. The meet was held at John Hunt Cross Country Park in Huntsville. The University of Illinois-Springfield runner finished the 5,000-meter race in 20:50.55. Illinois-Springfield took 16th with 411 points. Lee University won the 33-team invitational by scoring 53 points.

Raymond Wille (Hillsboro) had two assisted tackles for Lyon College as they lost a 31-7 battle to Wayland Baptist University. Lyon College is 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
