Tennis Toppers Fall To SCC Foes

Sally Matson picked up her third singles win of the season for Hillsboro on Thusday, Sept. 17, but other victories would be hard to come by as Roxana defeated the Tennis Toppers 8-1.

Mattson would defeat Cayla Fansher in three sets in the number five match, with the two exchanging 6-4 wins in the first two sets. In the third set, Mattson would pull ahead and defeated Fansher by a 10-6 margin.

The Shells would yield just four points in the first four singles matches, with Meghan Garmon the only Hiltopper to score more than one point. Brook Ozier would put up a fight in the number six match, but fell to Anna Palen 6-2, 6-3.

Roxana’s domination continued in the doubles matches, where Stephanie Kamp and Lindsey Ratliff defeated Torrence Clark and Ella Pfeifer 8-0, and Bailey Isom and Cayla Fansher defeated Meghan Garmon and Brook Ozier by the same margin.

Mattson and doubles partner Paige Lucykow nearly put Hillsboro back into the victory column, but Makenna John and Savannah Milsap would pull out an 8-5 victory for the Shells.

Versus Greenville

On Wednesday, Sept. 16, there were a lot of close matches, but no wins for the Lady Hiltoppers as they fell to Greenville 9-0 at the Hillsboro Sports Complex.

In singles, the closest match of the day would be in the number five bout, which saw Megan Fitzgerald defeat Hillsboro’s Sally Matson 6-4, 7-6 (2).

Matson would also be part of a tiebreaker in her doubles match with partner Paige Lucykow, which went 9-8 (5) before they fell to the team of Ellie Schaufelberger and Evie Johnson. The win for the Comets was a rematch from Saturday’s doubles tournament, which Matson and Lucykow won by a 9-8 score.

The Lady Hiltoppers will be in Jerseyville for their next match on Sept. 24, followed by a return home to face Vandalia on Monday, Sept. 28.
