After a week of rainouts, close calls and a JV match with Triad, the Hillsboro girls tennis team finally got a full match in on Tuesday, Aug. 31. Unfortunately, that match came against a stellar Greenville side that handed the Toppers their first loss of the season.
The visiting Comets had put in work in the offseason and it showed as they blanked Hillsboro 9-0, allowing just 10 points total in the match.
In singles, Ruthie Mathews took a pair of points off of Ellie Schaufelberger in the number three match before losing 6-1, 6-1, while Melissa Bell scored two against Cora Miller in the number six match, but fell 6-2, 6-0. Macy Shipman also scored in singles, but Evie Johnson collected a 6-1, 6-0 victory over the Topper senior.
Doubles proved to be just as tough for HHS. Shipman and Mathews were the closest to victory, taking Johnson and Mathias to 10-3 in the number two bout. The other two matches ended 10-1, with Ridens and Schaufelberger beating Lucykow and Matson; and 10-0, with Miller and Palen beating Bell and Hoover.
Following a trip to Highland on Wednesday, Hillsboro will play at home again on Sept. 2, against East Alton-Wood River at 4:30 p.m.
