The Hillsboro girls tennis team hosted a pair of former South Central Conference foes in their last two matches as they played Roxana on Sept. 16 and Marquette on Sept. 20.
In the Roxana match, Hillsboro found themselves down 4-2 after singles play, but nearly completed the comeback, winning two of the three doubles matches to lose 5-4 to the Shells.
The singles wins came from Macy Shipman in the number four match and from Melissa Bell in the number six match. Shipman and opponent Ava Meneses split the first two games, with Meneses winning game one 7-5 and Shipman winning game two 6-4. The rubber match would go to Shipman, who survived a 10-8 tiebreaker to collect the win.
Bell’s victory was slightly less dramatic as she dispatched Roxana’s Shelby Bowman 6-2, 6-3 in straight sets.
Bell also shared in a doubles win with partner Ryder Hoover as they teamed up to beat Norah Washington and Meneses 8-4. The number one doubles team of Paige Lucykow and Sally Mattson also collected a doubles win, beating Lindsey Ratliff and Cayla Fansher by an 8-6 final score.
Wins would be harder to come by in the Toppers’ 8-1 loss to Marquette on Sept. 20. The Explorers swept singles play, giving up just 10 points in six straight-set victories, and won two of the doubles matches as well.
The lone loss came against Mattson and Lucykow in the top doubles duel. The Hillsboro twosome defeated Monica Wendle and Alexis Williams 8-6 in the match to avoid the shutout.
In addition to the two matches against Roxana and Marquette, the Toppers also played another former SCC school, East Alton-Wood River, on Monday, Sept. 13, with Mother Nature collecting the win in a rainout.
The weather issues kept Hillsboro from a probable win as Sally Mattson (8-2), Ruthie Matthews (8-0), Macy Shipman (8-0) and Ryder Hoover (8-1) all won their singles matches before the cancellation. Paige Lucykow was ahead 7-3 in her match as well, with Melissa Bell getting a forfeit victory.
Hillsboro will be back at home on Thursday, Sept. 23, as they face Jerseyville, followed by a trip to the Centralia Annies Invitational.
