Steven L. York, 70, of Springfield, died Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2020, at HSHS St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.

Private graveside services will be held in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, MO. Military honors will be provided by the United States Army. In accordance with his wishes, cremation rites will be accorded by the Bisch Crematory.

Mr. York was born Sept. 23, 1950, in Centralia. He enlisted in the United States Army Sept. 17, 1968 and served in the Vietnam War from Sept. 16, 1969 until Sept. 15, 1970. He earned the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device. He was honorably discharged from service, Sept. 16, 1974.

After military service, he returned to college where he earned a Master of Education degree. He served as an educator with the Illinois Department of Corrections for many years, retiring in 2012.

A strong man of faith, he volunteered with the Carpenter’s for Christ, traveling around building churches and other buildings. He was a strong supporter of the American Red Cross and had a passion for many other charitable organizations. He was a member of Grace Southern Baptist Church in Virden.

He is survived by his two sons, Jason York and Derek (wife Jami) York, both of Springfield; a granddaughter; step-grandson; his sister, Dodie (husband Lynn) Meridith of Odin; several  nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may direct memorial contributions to the Carpenter’s for Christ c/o Cherry Street Baptist Church 520 Cleveland Ave. Attalla, AL 35954.
