Stephen R. Compton, 74, of Greenville, died at 2:40 a.m., Monday, Nov. 29, 2021, at Greenville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Cremation rites will be accorded and no public ceremonies will be held. Mr. Compton was born July 21, 1947 in Highland, the son of Jack Ashby and Jessie Aileen (Holdzkom) Compton.
Mr. Compton was a graduate of Greenville High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Greenville College. For the majority of his career, he taught English at the Lena-Winslow Junior High School. Upon returning to Greenville, he worked many more years as a substitute teacher. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Greenville and was a sports fan, expecially enjoying tennis. He was also an avid baseball card collector.
Mr. Compton is survived by his children, Matt (wife Kim Smithson) Compton of Champaign, Sara (husband Jayson) Wealti of Evansville, WI, and Emily (husband Joe) Reed of Hillsboro, OR; and grandchildren, Kai and Harper Wealti, and Jackson Reed.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Kent Compton.
