State Trip Solidifies Guinn's Spot Among Litchfield's Best

Posted

It was a fitting end to a very good high school career as Litchfield senior Carly Guinn made her final putt on the ninth hole at Red Tail Run Golf Course in Decatur.

The putt gave Guinn a 44 for the front nine on the Class 1A State Finals course and put her in 55th overall for the tournament, but beyond the final standings, Guinn’s performance in the tournament was a tribute to her dedication over the last four years.

“Carly represented Litchfield very well this season,” Coach Justin Ripley said of Guinn. “Coach Dan Newkirk and myself could not be more proud of her toughness and determination this season.”

That toughness showed on both days of the tournament as she went up against some of the best players in the state. Starting on the back-nine, Guinn was 9-over at the turn, with seven bogies, one triple and a birdie on the par-4 12th hole to start the day.

It looked as if the front nine might be an even tougher road for the senior after a bogey and a nine on the par-5 second hole, but Guinn collected herself and peeled off four straight pars before finishing the round with a 43, going bogey-bogey-par on the last three holes.

Guinn’s 88 was good enough to put her in a tie for 60th individually and was two strokes under the cut line of 90, meaning she had another 18 holes to improve her position.

On day two, Guinn shaved two strokes off her score from the day before on the back nine as she put in three pars, five bogies and a double bogey to make the turn at 7-over on the day.

Guinn’s worst hole again came early on the front nine, a triple on the first hole, but again she rebounded with a pair of pars and a bogey on the par-4 fourth hole.

A double and four bogies closed out her trip to state, giving her an 87 for the day and a 31-over-par 175 for the tournament.

While she didn’t earn Litchfield’s third state golf medal, Guinn did solidify her place as one of Litchfield’s top female athletes. In addition to her prowess on the golf course over the last four years, Guinn was also the second leading scorer last year for the LHS girls basketball team and has been one of the top Class 1A high jumpers the last several years, finishing eighth as a junior in her second trip to state in as many opportunities.

So while Guinn’s golf journey is over, it was just the first of many exciting “lasts” for the Litchfield senior in 2021 and 2022.
