Stanley George Horst, 92, of Springfield, died on Sunday, Oct. 16, 2022, in Springfield.

Visitation will be held Thursday, Oct. 20, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Union Avenue Christian Church in Litchfield. Funeral services will follow, beginning at 11 a.m. at the church with Nancy Bandy officiating. Burial will be held Thursday, Oct. 20, at 3 p.m. at Elmwood Cemetery in Centralia. Plummer Funeral Home in Litchfield is assisting the family.

Mr. Horst was born April 13, 1930, in Hoyleton, to Louis and Cleone Horst. He married Dorothy Mae Hill on June 1, 1957, and she preceded him in death on Sept. 25, 1980. He later married Brenda Kay (Rees) Ussery on July 13, 2000, and she preceded him in death on Dec. 10, 2013.

He graduated from Nashville High School in 1948. He went on to graduate from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in 1952 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and in 1959 with a master’s degree in physical education. In college, he served as captain and MVP of the basketball team.

Mr. Horst was a veteran of the Air Force, serving in the French Morocco and Whitman Air Base in Missouri.

He taught school for 36 years; four years at Ramsey High School, 14 years at Hillsboro High School and 18 years in Litchfield, where he was coach and athletic director until his retirement in 1992.

Mr. Horst was a member of the Union Avenue Christian Church, Montgomery County Retired Teachers Association and American Legion Post 436.

He is survived by his daughters, Cindy (husband Brad) Horst Cross of Maple Grove, MN, and Susan Horst of Springfield; sons, Kent (wife Tara) Horst of Arlington, TX, and Brian (wife Michele) Horst of Castle Rock, CO; stepdaughter, Kara (husband Brad) Ussery Hargis; grandchildren, Andrea Cross Kreit, Kennan Cross, Taylor Horst, Sophie Horst, Michael Horst, Rees Hargis and Rylan Hargis; and great-grandchildren, Lysander and Roderik Kreit.

In addition to his wives, Mr. Horst was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Rutger Horst on Dec. 14, 2002; and brother, Wallace Horst on Feb. 25, 2009.
