Basketball is still a learning process for the second-year Lincolnwood High School girls basketball program and the delay due to the pandemic didn’t do the Lady Lancers any favors for sure.
Still, the team showed sparks of lessons learned from a year ago and scored three more points than they averaged in 2019-20 in their 50-17 loss to North Greene on Saturday, Feb. 6, in Raymond.
Defensively, the Lancers did a lot of things right in the early going, forcing turnovers and holding the Lady Spartans scoreless for the first two minutes. When North Greene did get on the board, it was only due to offensive rebounds by 5’10” sophomore Cami Hurt, which gave the visitors a 4-0 lead near the halfway point.
Lincolnwood cut into the lead with a basket by Katelyn Payne for the first score of the season, with the senior forward picking up her second field goal at the 2:53 mark to make it a 5-4 game, with a North Greene free throw sandwiched in between.
The Spartans would begin to get on track after that though, as they peeled off the next seven points courtesy of steals at half court leading to fast break points.
Sophie Rainwater ended the run with a last second bucket for the Lancers, but the hosts still trailed 12-6 going into the second.
North Greene continued to work on the defensive end in the second quarter, holding Lincolnwood to a Maggie McClelland lay-up off a nice steal and assist by Avery Pope at the 4:10 mark.
The defensive pressure turned into offensive production for the Spartans as they fed Hurt and 5’11 junior Jenna Barnard for nine of North Greene’s 18 points in the quarter.
Down 30-8 at the break, Lincolnwood worked to get back into the contest. Cassie Krager hit a three just 39 seconds into the quarter and Lincolnwood had their best offensive quarter of the game, scoring nine points as McClelland, Pope and Payne also found the bottom of the net.
The Spartans would not let up though, adding one to their lead in the third and going on a eight point run to start the fourth. With North Greene up 48-17, the clock ran throughout the final 4:51 due to the 30-point mercy rule as Lincolnwood fell to 0-1 with a 33-point loss.
Payne would lead Lincolnwood with six points, followed by McClelland with four, Krager with three and Pope and Rainwater with two each.
Hurt led North Greene with 18 points, while Hailey Thompson added 12. Bailey Berry chipped in eight points and was the defensive leader for the Spartans, picking the Lincolnwood guards’ pockets at half court and finding Hurt, Thompson and Barnard, who finished with seven, for quick buckets.
The Lady Lancers will look to regroup and build on their performance on Monday, Feb. 8, as they take on South Fork in Kincaid.
