Spartans Edge Lancers At Lincolnwood

The Lincolnwood girls basketball team took advantage of a 10-day layoff over the Thanksgiving break to sharpen their skills and it showed when the Lancers hit the floor on Monday, Nov. 29, against North Greene.

Even without regular starter Haelee Damm out due to injury, the Lancers had five players score to match a season high and netted 30 points, also a season best. Unfortunately, the visiting Spartans got a big game from senior Bailey Berry and escaped the woodshed with a 35-30 victory.

The Lancers got the first point of the game on a free throw by Lilly Terneus, but Berry and sophomore Karley Moore hit back-to-back threes to jump out to a 6-1 lead early in the first quarter.

The Spartans would get just one field goal from then on out as they finished the quarter with 11 points. Down by as many as six at one point, Lincolnwood outscored North Greene 8-2 in the final five minutes of the quarter, getting baskets from Cora Stevens, Terneus, Avery Pope and Amanda Seelbach. Seelbach’s score with 20 seconds left, her second bucket of the quarter, tied the game at 11-11.

After trailing seven of the eight minutes in the first quarter, Lincolnwood jumped out to an early lead in the second with a jumper from Taryn Millburg that made it 13-11.

The two teams would trade points back and forth, with North Greene holding a slim 17-16 advantage at the midway point of the quarter.

In the final three minutes, the Spartans would stretch out that lead to 22-16, getting two free throws from Bella Bushnell and three more points from Berry, who had a game high 11 points in the first half.

While North Greene now lead by six, matching their biggest lead from the first quarter, Lincolnwood was still within striking distance and proved that with a standout defensive effort in the third quarter. The Spartans were held to just two points and zero field goals in the third quarter as the Lancers all but erased the deficit.

Neither team scored a field goal in the first five minutes of the quarter, with Lincolnwood getting a free throw from Taryn Millburg and North Greene hitting two charity tosses to hold a 24-17 lead.

The Lancers finished on a high note, though, getting baskets from Millburg, Seelbach and Stevens to shrink the lead down to a single point, 24-23, with a quarter to play.

After going more than 12 minutes without a field goal, North Greene snapped the skid in a big way. Berry knocked down two dagger threes to start the fourth, giving North Greene a 30-23 lead with five minutes left in the game.

Avery Pope would finally get the Lancers on the board with a pair of free throws at the 3:13 mark, but North Greene got a bucket from Bushnell to re-up the lead to seven points.

Pope and the Lancers refused to go away, though. Lincolnwood’s leading scorer dropped in a layup to make it 32-27, then added an old fashioned three point with 30 seconds left to make it 33-30.

The Lancers tried to stretch the game out, but Berry hit a pair of free throws to extend the lead to five and Lincolnwood’s chance on the other end missed its mark to sew up the win for the Spartans.

Avery Pope led the Lancers in scoring with 10 points, followed by Amanda Seelbach and Cora Stevens with six apiece, Taryn Millburg with five and Lilly Terneus with three. Berry led North Greene, and everyone else, in scoring with 20 points, including nine in the fourth quarter.
