The Hillsboro girls soccer team picked up their fourth straight win and second consecutive conference victory on Thursday, May 6, as they took a 2-1 decision over Southwestern on the Piasa Birds’ home field.
All three goals would come in the first half, with Hillsboro scoring first in spite of a strong headwind. With 26:09 left in the opening period, Kylee Pastrovich took a pass on the right side and worked her way to the goal unchallenged.
The Topper senior would pop a shot over the Southwestern keeper that hit the underside of the crossbar and cross the line behind the Piasa bird goalie.
Hillsboro’s lead would last about three minutes, before Southwestern got the equalizer. A shot from deep by the Piasa Birds would trick goalkeeper Avery Walden, but senior Nikya Harston managed to get a shoulder on the ball to avoid catastrophe momentarily. In the scramble to clear the ball, Southwestern’s Morgan Durham got a foot on a shot, which found the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1.
The score would remain tied until the final five minutes of the half, when Hillsboro added the go-ahead goal. The Toppers would send a through-ball to Layne Rupert, who raced to corral the pass before Southwestern’s goalie could reach it. The Piasa Bird keeper dove for the loose ball, but Rupert reached it first and took a touch around the prone goalie for an easy finish.
Both teams would have chances in the second half, with Hillsboro controlling possession for much of the time with the wind at their backs.
Southwestern would try to counter and would have several solid attempts, but the defensive core of Harston, Vanessa Compton, Alex Frailey, Melissa Rufus, Hailey Garcia and Allie Kuhns would turn away attack after attack to maintain the victory.
The win improved Hillsboro to 4-1 on the season and 2-0 in the South Central Conference. The Toppers will have a pair of non-conference road games on May 10 (at Athens) and May 11 (at Springfield Lutheran) before returning to SCC play on May 13 at Gillespie.
