Smithsonian Picks Hillsboro For Exhibit

The Orpheum Theater was packed with people anxious to find out what Hillsboro’s “big announcement” was on Wednesday, Sept. 8.

Community and Economic Planner Jonathan Weyer revealed the secret he has been sitting on for weeks in a special trailer that was played at the theater. The City of Hillsboro has been selected to be featured in the Smithsonian Institution’s traveling exhibit “Spark! Places of Innovation” beginning in 2023. The exhibit will be hosted in Hillsboro in 2023, the city’s Bicentennial year, and will subsequently travel to be displayed in 26 different states over a six-year period.

The Smithsonian’s “Spark” exhibits highlight innovation in rural America from the perspective of the people who lived there. The short trailer used to reveal the announcement featured an array of active community members and was created by several Hillsboro residents: cinema photography by Matt Sands and Sarah Marley, still photography by Kaitlin Jachino, music editing and VFX by Susan Collins, drone footage provided by Brad Stone, and was narrated by Weyer. Hillsboro Area Hospital held an after party at the Opera House Brewing Company following the reveal.
