Skins Walk It Off Against Mohawks

Posted

It was the best of both worlds for the Nokomis softball team during their back-to-back games against Morrisonville on May 6 and May 7. Not only did the Lady Redskins win both games to go over .500 for the season, but they also experienced the thrill of victory in two drastically different ways.

On Thursday, the Redskins came back from a 7-6 two-out seventh inning deficit to win 9-7 over the Mohawks, followed by a 17-4 rout in Morrisonville on Friday in five innings.

Thursday’s home game was a back and forth affair, four lead changes in the seven innings. After two scoreless frames, Morrisonville would score first, taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the third, but Nokomis answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Mia Fesser and Emma Sneddon led off the inning with a pair of singles, followed by two straight outs to put the rally in jeopardy. Fortunately, Aubrey Jaros singled to keep the run alive and drive in Fesser, with Karli Wanger driving in two more runs on a two-strike double before Morrisonville could get out of the inning.

Nokomis added a fourth run in the fourth when Addison Dangbar doubled to center field, driving in Presley Mehochko, who courtesy ran for Emma Hill after Hill led off the inning with a single.

Mehochko would score again in the sixth after Hill doubled to start the frame. A walk, a pop up and a ground out would push the freshman around the bases for the second time and made the score 5-2 going into the final inning.

After picking up six hits in the first six innings, Morrisonville exploded for five hits and five runs in the top of the seventh, with the biggest blow coming on a three-run home run by Whitney Lipe with two outs.

Aubrey Jaros would walk the next batter after Lipe’s bomb, but notched her eighth strikeout of the game to get out of the inning without further trouble.

From up three to down two, Nokomis started their comeback with a single, two force outs and two more singles by Baylee Cesaretti and Emma Hill, whose base hit drove in a run.

A walk to Addison Dangbar loaded the bases with two outs for senior Mia Fesser, who doubled to left field to plate Cesaretti, Mehochko and Dangbar and end the game in walk-off fashion.

Fesser was one of five players with multiple hits, going 2-for-5 with a run scored and the three big runs in the seventh. Emma Hill went 4-for-4, with her courtesy runner, Presley Mehochko, scoring three times. Aubrey Jaros (3-4), Karli Wanger (3-4) and Emma Sneddon (2-4) also had multiple hits in the win.

At Morrisonville

After the barnburner the day before, Nokomis left little doubt in Friday’s contest as they scored nine runs in the second inning and never looked back.

The Redskins pounded out 24 hits and added six runs in the third and two runs in the fourth to pick up their third win of the season. All four of Morrisonville’s runs came in the third inning, but that only drew the Mohawks within 11 at the time.

The day would belong to Reghan Jonas, who earned the win on the mound and went 3-for-3 with two home runs, a single and six runs driven in.

Emma Hill, Addison Dangbar and Aubrey Jaros all had four hits apiece, while Mia Fesser, Karli Wanger, Hailey Engelman and Baylee Cesaretti added in two hits apiece, including a triple for Cesaretti.

The short-game win improved Nokomis to 3-2 on the season, while Morrisonville fell to 1-5.
