The Hillsboro High School volleyball team had their hands full in their opening game of the season as they took on a talented Roxana squad on the Lady Shells’ home court. The Toppers would start off strong, but weren’t able to escape the Metro East with a win.
Hillsboro controlled the pace of game one and scored a 25-23 victory over the Shells to put themselves 25 points away from going home with a win.
Roxana would rebound though, putting together a potent attack and a strong effort on the defensive end. The Shells took games two and three by the scores of 25-18 and 25-15 to escape with a South Central Conference victory.
On the attack, Hillsboro’s Haley Major and Layne Rupert each had six kills, while Kaci Papin tacked on five scoring hits as well. Reagan DeVaisher and Jordan Jacobs added two kills each, while Emma Miller, Alayna McCario and Ally Devore had one apiece. DeVasier and Jacobs handled the setting duties, notching 12 and 10 assists respectively.
Defensively, Papin, McCario and Rupert all had blocks, while Ally Devore led the team in digs with 15. Devore also paced the Toppers in aces, putting down two, while Jacobs and Rupert added one ace each.
The junior varsity also fell to the Shells, losing in two games 25-18, 25-14.
Hillsboro will be back at home for each of their next two games as they host Vandalia on Thursday, March 18, followed by a date with Staunton on Friday, March 19.
