Seniors Off To Strong Start For Topper Wrestling

Posted

With limited practice time and many athletes coming straight from another season (the story of most high school sports in 2021), the Hillsboro wrestling team was off and rolling last week as they opened their season in Auburn with matches against the host Trojans and Beardstown.

While they didn’t result in any team victories, Coach Garrett Young was happy with his team’s performance and looked forward to the rest of the season.

“We wrestled well as a team given the fact that it has been a compact season with just a handful of practices,” Young said. “We will see both teams again and I believe it will be a different story next time. I’m excited for the kids to be able to compete again!”

Both matches would be close, with Hillsboro falling to Auburn 48-30 and to Beardstown 36-30. Seniors Marshall Hughes and Andrew Law would each come up with a pair of wins by fall each to help set the tone for the year.

Hillsboro would collect five wins in the match against Auburn, with Ben Huber getting a forfeit victory at 126 pounds. The other victories would come by fall, with Magnus Wells (285) and Zander Wells (160) joining Law and Hughes in scoring pins.

Of the 10 contested matches against the Trojans, Hillsboro won four, with Auburn taking six victories, also all by pin. The other four matches included Huber’s forfeit victory, two Hillsboro forfeits at 138 and 152 and a double forfeit at 106.

In the Beardstown match, Hillsboro again scored five victories, with Keegan Murray  (113) and Griffin Hughes (120) winning by forfeit.

This time Reese Morford joined Law and Marshall Hughes in scoring pins, as he dispatched Jacob Hoffman in the 182-pound match.

The Tigers would win five of the eight contested matches, all by fall, with a forfeit win at 152 as well. The match also had three double forfeits, at 106, 126 and 195. In the other match at the meet, Auburn defeated Beardstown 56-12.

Jacksonville

Following the opening match, Hillsboro traveled to Jacksonville on May 3 to start off week two.

The Toppers would fall to the host Crimsons 53-12, but scored their first win of the season against the short-handed Jacksonville Routt/Illinois School for the Visually Impaired co-op team, 60-6.

Hillsboro picked up two wins in the match against Jacksonville as Marshall Hughes pinned Aiden Hartke at 220 pounds and Magnus Wells did the same to Oliver Cooley at 285.

The Crimsons would win 11 of the 13 contested matches, plus one forfeit at 195 pounds. Eight of the 11 wins would come by fall, with two determined by major decision and one by decision.

“We actually wrestled better than what the score may say, but we will continue to work and get better,” Young said about the match with the Crimsons.

Hillsboro would benefit from eight forfeits against Routt, but also won two of the three contested matches.

Marshall Hughes remained perfect on the season with his fourth pin in as many matches, while Matt Page also picked up a win by fall, pinning Aiden Lahey at 132 pounds.

Hillsboro was back at it Wednesday against Beardstown, with Midwest Central also in the mix. On Thursday, the Toppers will be at home for one of three matches at HHS this year as they take on Taylorville and Springfield Southeast at 6 p.m.
