The Calvary Saints shot 57 percent from the field on Thursday, Jan. 6, as they handed Nokomis a 63-57 loss in Springfield.
The two teams would be tied at 14 going into the second quarter when Calvary’s Ben Crowder knocked down a pair of threes for the Saints. Nokomis countered down low with Ryan Eisenbarth and Jake Johnson, who scored one basket each and combined for nine free throw attempts, eight of which they made.
Still, Crowder’s outside presence, coupled with five points from Jeremiah Sortor and four from Connor Brown, helped power the home team to a 33-26 lead at halftime.
Calvary would hit two more threes in the third quarter, but that accounted for more than half of their points as Nokomis climbed back into the game. Forward Reece Lohman had five points, while Johnson and Nolan Himes had four points apiece as the Redskins cut the lead to 44-43 going into the fourth.
Himes continued to contribute in the fourth, with two threes and another field goal for eight of his career-best 14 in the quarter. Unfortunately, the Saints answered with a pair of threes of their own and went 9-for-14 from the free-throw line in the fourth to hold on for the win.
The Saints’ victory spoiled a season-best 19-point night for Ryan Eisenbarth, who had five field goals and went 9-for-12 from the free-throw line. In addition to Eisenbarth and Himes in double figures, Nokomis also got nine from Jake Johnson, eight from Elijah Aumann, five from Reece Lohman and two from Ian Keller.
The loss was Nokomis’ first in MSM Conference play as they moved to 1-1 in conference and 8-7 overall. The Redskins, who rebounded with a win over Lincolnwood the next night, will play at Pana on Thursday, Jan. 13, for their final game before the Rick McGraw Memorial Invite in Litchfield next week.
