Ruth Virginia Weatherford, 98, of Litchfield, died on Friday, Oct. 16, 2020, at 2:50 p.m. at Heritage Health: Therapy and Senior Care in Litchfield.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, Oct. 20, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Plummer Funeral Home in Litchfield. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, Oct. 21, beginning at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery in Litchfield.

Mrs. Weatherford was born Jan. 22, 1922, in Macoupin County near Gillespie and Carlinville, to Murl and Virgie (Hart) Mitchell. She married George William Weatherford on July 5, 1944, in St. Charles, MO, and he preceded her in death on April 18, 1985.

She graduated from Litchfield High School with the class of 1939. During her career, she served as a cook for the Litchfield Community Unit School District #12 for several years.

Mrs. Weatherford was a member of the former Barnett Christian Church, Honey Bend Quilt Club, New Hope HEA of Montgomery County, Montgomery County Genealogical Society and the Litchfield Senior Club as a reporter.

She was well-known for her quilts, often entering them into the Montgomery, Macoupin and Illinois State fairs, winning blue ribbons from all three fairs. She enjoyed crafting and canning fruits and vegetables. She was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and Illini basketball.

Mrs. Weatherford is survived by two sons, Donald Weatherford of O’Fallon and Rick (Rhonda) Weatherford of Litchfield; daughter, Janette (Lindell) Stephens of Owasso, OK; brother, Shirley Mitchell of Westminster, CA; eight grandchildren, Kendra Hutchens, Michael Weatherford, Marci (Chris) Lowery, Meghan (Eddie) Brown, Ryan (Sarah) Weatherford, Nicholas Weatherford, Ashley (Brandon) Berner and Jared Stephens; and 17 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Marvin and Dennis Weatherford; and three sisters, Reba Reynolds, Bula Cortino and Brenda Thomas.
