A standout performance turned a close game at halftime into a blowout on Saturday, Dec. 11, as the Hillsboro and Litchfield girls basketball teams squared off at the T. Todt Shootout in Nokomis.
Litchfield trailed by just one point in the second quarter and were still within striking distance of the Toppers, who led 19-13 at halftime. But then Hillsboro found a second gear behind junior guard Layne Rupert who poured in 30 points to lead the Toppers to a 52-26 win.
Rupert’s points were split equally between the two halves, but her 15 in the first two quarters accounted for all but four of Hillsboro’s points.
Litchfield was able to stay close with threes from Carly Guinn and Elise Walch, plus three more points from Emma Walch in the opening half.
Litchfield’s Laura Boston, who had two points in the first quarter, cut the Hillsboro lead to 19-15, but Rupert continued to test the Litchfield defense. Slashing to the basket, with an occasional three mixed in, Rupert scored nine of the next 11 points to give Hillsboro a 29-17 advantage, with Boston adding a field goal for the Panthers.
The two teams would trade baskets in the final two and a half minutes, with Sierra Compton and Aubrey Evans scoring for Hillsboro and Elise Walch knocking down her second three for Litchfield.
After relying on Rupert for most of their points going into the fourth, where they led 33-20, others on the Topper roster got into the act in the final frame. Kenadie Carlock scored five points in the fourth, with Sierra Compton, Sophia Blankenship, Alex Frailey and Meagan White also contributing in a 19-6 fourth quarter that turned the game into a blowout.
Rupert also scored five more in the quarter, upping her total to 30 and surpassing ex-Topper Sammi Matoush for the most points in a girls T. Todt shootout game. Matoush had 28 points in Hillsboro’s 76-43 win in the inaugural event in Carlinville in 2018.
Carlock added in seven points, while Compton had six. Blankenship (3), Evans (2), Frailey (2) and White (2) rounded out the scoring for Hillsboro.
Laura Boston led Litchfield in scoring, netting six of her eight points in the second half. Elise Walch added seven points, while Emma Walch chipped in eight. Carly Guinn and Lily Braasch also scored three apiece for Litchfield.
The two South Central Conference foes will face off again on Feb. 10, in the regular season finale. Until then, the Toppers have a South Central Conference tilt on Monday, Dec. 13, at Vandalia, while Litchfield will be in Gillespie the same night.
