Ronald D. Slagel, 69, of Hillsboro, died on Monday Nov. 18, 2024, at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield with his family by his side.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Hoffen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Slagel was born on Nov. 28, 1954, to the late James A. and Charlotte (Betterton) Slagel. He was born and raised in Panama. He graduated early from Hillsboro High School and immediately went to work. Mr. Slagel’s early working years were spent at Hillsboro Glass Factory and later he worked as a correctional officer at Graham Correctional Center in Hillsboro where he would ultimately retire. Mr. Slagel soon tired of retirement and went to work for the Boilermakers Local 83 where he would continue working for several years.
In his spare time, Mr. Slagel enjoyed gardening, fishing and watching sports on television and listening on the radio, often watching and listening to several games at once. Most of all, he loved the time he spent with his beloved grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Mr. Slagel is survived by his stepmother, Jean Greek; daughter, Erin Walton; stepdaughter, Stacy (Clark) Cameron; stepsister, Gina (Norman) Kimme; sister-in-law, Marilyn Slagel; grandchildren Morgan (Josh) Thrasher, Sarah McDonald, Devon McDonald, Rozzalynn McDonald and Torrie McDonald, Carly Cameron and Lexi Cameron; and great-grandchildren Skylynn and Leham Thrasher, in addition to many nieces, nephews, extended family and beloved friends.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his former spouse, Vickie (Matthews) Slagel; and his siblings, James Slagel, Naomi Coleman and Earl Elam.
