Rodger Ray Best, 71, died Tuesday, March 9, 2021, at 9:17 p.m. in Hillsboro.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 13, at Zion Lutheran Church in Litchfield with Pastor Fred Kramer officiating. Burial was held in Worden Cemetery.

Mr. Best was born June 18, 1949, in Alton, to Frederick and Ruth Lanette (Welch) Best. He married Karen Magdalene (Lueker) Best on March 29, 1975, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hamel, and she survives.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Litchfield, where he was also confirmed. He attended Civic Memorial High School in Bethalto and Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville. He received his bachelor’s degree in education and worked as a special education teacher until his retirement. 

After retirement, he worked as a security guard for Monterey Mine outside of Carlinville. He enjoyed hunting and spending time with his grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Jill Best (Zachery) Fenton; three grandchildren, Addisyn Fenton, Ryder Fenton and Kale Fenton, all of Mt. Olive; and a brother, Darrell (Lisa) Best of Shelbyville.
