Richard Joe Smith, 84, of Hillsboro, died on Thursday, Jan. 27, 2022, at Caseyville Nursing and Rehab Center in Caseyville.
Upon his request, Richard was cremated and no services will be held at this time. Barry Wilson Funeral Home in Maryville is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Smith was born on Dec. 12, 1937, in West Frankfort to William and Wave (Ehrhardt) Smith. He worked at the Madison County Assessor's Office for many years until retiring. He served in the National Guard Reserves and was an avid fisherman.
He is survived by a brother, Charles (Donna) Smith of St. Peters, MO; numerous nieces and nephews; and his canine companion, Penny Boo.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his former wife, Janice Kay Smith; and his brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Mary K. Ehrhardt.
