Richard “Dick” Elam Sr., 87, of Taylor Springs, died on Monday, Jan. 24, 2022, at his residence.

Memorial services will begin at 11 a.m.  on Saturday, Feb. 5, at the Taylor Springs Community Center. The family requests casual dress. Burial will be at a later date. Hough and Sons Funeral Home in Hillsboro is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Elam was born in Coffeen on Sept 12, 1934, to Harold and Edith (Bess) Elam. He married Kathleen Shelton on Jan 11, 1953, and she preceded him on Sept. 21, 1999.

He worked at Caterpillar for over 10 years then retired from CIPS in Coffeen, and owned and operated Elam’s Towing in Taylor Springs, which is still under family operation today.

He was a member of the Hillsboro Moose, Taylor Springs Fire Department and had served on the Taylor Springs Village Board. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, hunting and trap shooting. He loved to socialize with friends and was an avid joke teller.

He is survived by daughters Debbie Jones of Hillsboro, Pam Guinn of Donnellson, Ranee’ (husband Carl Rogers) Elam, Jodi (husband David) Summers; a son, Dick (wife Mona) Elam Jr.; 12 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild on the way; and a sister, Wanda Taylor of Irving.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a grandchild, Jordan Michael Jones in 1996; sisters Martha Young, Marilyn Munos, Lola Scheifer and Donna Elmore; and one brother, Alfred Elam Sr.
