Richard Albert Tobias, 78, died on Tuesday, Dec. 31, at Hillsboro Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
Mr. Tobias was born on April 7, 1946, to the late Edward and Doris (Parkes) Tobias. He graduated from Hillsboro High School with the class of 1964. He married Audrey Bellaver on June 26, 1965 and they later divorced. He then married Rhonda Hammon, and she survives.
He began his working career at Latham Furniture Store owned and operated by his uncle and aunt, Albert and Evelyn Tobias. Moving on to Dude’s Standard Service and ASARCO Inc. From 1969 to 1979 he was a credit representative for GMAC. From 1980 to 1996 he was employed as the assistant vice president at Effingham State Bank until retiring to purchase and operate The Altamont Motel from 1996 to 2003.
Mr. Tobias was a car enthusiast, a history buff, enjoyed playing poker and solitaire and loved to vacation at Lake of the Ozarks. He always had a funny story, or “Tobiasism” to share with family, friends and strangers.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Robb Tobias of Champaign, Wendy (Tobias) McClure of St. Charles, MO and Sarah (Tobias) McConnell of Hillsboro; grandchildren, Audrey McClure of St. Charles, MO, Kayne McConnell of Neoga and Kinley McConnell of Hillsboro; and sister, Jane (Rick) Spencer of Coffeen.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Tobias was preceded in death by his son, Steven Eric Tobias and brother, Guy Edward Tobias.
