Rhoda Ann Riffey, 95, of Chatham, formerly of Springfield, Virden and Girard, died on Sunday, May 15, 2022, at her home.

A private family graveside service was conducted in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Virden with Pastor Bobbi Dykema officiating. A Celebration of Life was held Friday, May 20, at Mario’s Restaurant in Springfield. Bisch and Son Funeral Home in Springfield assisted the family.

Mrs. Riffey was born Dec. 18, 1926, in Virden, to Harry and Della (Weedman) Hammond. She married Otis L. “Vern” Riffey on April 24, 1946, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 15, 1994.

She was very active in the Virden and Girard communities for many years. She served in the mayor’s office under Ted Lay and then was very proud to be the first lady realtor in Macoupin County, representing Ted Lay Real Estate.

After her retirement, Mrs. Riffey moved to Chatham to be near her family. She enjoyed antiques, traveling, doll collection, everything Elvis, but most of all, spoiling her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a devoted life member of the First Church of the Brethren in Virden, Girard and Springfield.

She is survived by her children, Susan Riffey of Chatham, Thomas (Theresa) Riffey of Raymond, David Riffey Sr. of Sioux Falls, SD, and Kimbra (Thomas) Summerlin of Springfield; grandchildren, Michael Riffey, Tracy Riffey, David (Jen) Riffey Jr., Ayrin (Ryan) Hintz, Mary (Kyle) Englar and Emily Ramey; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Riffey was preceded in death by her son Steven in 1952; brother, Harry Hammond; sister-in-law, Louella Hammond; stepbrother, Willis Leach; and sister, Cleora Allen.
