On Aug. 24, heat indexes were too high to have a golf match at the Litchfield Country Club. On Sept. 8, it was the Lady Panthers’ play, not the temperatures, that were scorching.
For the first time this season the Litchfield girls golf team had all of their players shoot under 60, with three golfers in the 40s. That was plenty good enough to give them the top spot in the match as they defeated Civic Memorial 182 to 212.
Junior Hailey Rentz has been steady all season, but stepped up her game on Wednesday and earned medalist honors with a 6-over-par 43. Rentz’s round was a stroke better than the second place finishers, which also came from the Litchfield roster as Laura Boston and Carly Guinn both shot 44 on their home course.
Charlotte Gardner and Alyssa Loyd tied for the fourth spot with a 51, while Lauren Monke added a 57 for the sixth score. The solid play didn’t end with the varsity, though, as Rilynne Nockmann played a JV round and broke 60 as well with a 54.
The success on the course was contagious apparently as it bled over to the lone Hillsboro golfer who hit the course Wednesday as well. Meagan Jorn shot a 9-over-par 46 to finish just behind the Litchfield trio of Rentz, Boston and Guinn. The Topper senior would take fourth by three strokes over Civic Memorial’s Allie Robeson, who was fifth with a 49.
Hillsboro will be back in Litchfield on Tuesday, Sept. 14, with Pana and Gillespie also joining in. The day before, the Panthers will host Carlinville, Southwestern and Lincolnwood at the Litchfield Country Club.
