Redskins Snap Skid With Win Over Wildcats

After a frustrating start to the season the Nokomis High School baseball team got something to smile about on Tuesday, May 11, as they defeated Mt. Olive 7-1 in Nokomis.

The seven runs were the most by Nokomis since their 26-1 drubbing of Edinburg in the first game of the season. The first of those seven runs came without the benefit of a hit as Benny Clavin walked, stole second and moved to third and home on a pair of passed balls.

Nokomis’ first hit wouldn’t come until their tenth batter of the game, when Clavin reached base once again with a single to center. Hit number two would come much quicker as Elijah Auman doubled in the next at-bat and drove in both Clavin and Dallas Sneddon, who had walked earlier in the inning.

Mt. Olive would get one run back in the fourth inning to make it 3-1, but Nokomis scored three more times in the bottom of the inning to extend their lead to five runs.

After Sneddon reached on a single and Clavin took first on an error, Aumann blasted a two-run triple to center that made it 5-1 when Sneddon and Clavin crossed home plate. Landon Engelman would drive in Aumann in the next at-bat with a single and Nokomis led 6-1 with three innings to play. Clavin, who got the start on the mound for Nokomis, set down the side in the fifth, his final inning of work, while his teammates added an insurance run after Matthew Ulrici doubled and scored on a single by Sneddon.

Ryan Eisenbarth would come on in relief and sat the Wildcats down in both the sixth and seventh, with their only base runner reaching on an error with two outs in the final frame. Eisenbarth worked around the miscue and struck out the final batter on five pitches to give Nokomis their second win.

Both Aumannn and Sneddon would have two hits in the game, with Aumann driving in four and Sneddon plating one.

Clavin, who had one hit and three runs scored at the plate, struck out six and walked one while giving up three hits to earn the victory on the mound.

Nokomis vs. Pawnee

The victory was particularly satisfying after a narrow 6-5 loss to Pawnee the day before.

Nokomis scored first with a run in the bottom of the first when Elijah Aumann singled and scored on a triple by Landon Engelman. The Indians would answer in the second though, scoring two runs in the frame, with an insurance run coming in the third inning to make it 3-1.

Neither team would score in the next two innings, but Pawnee expanded their lead in the sixth to 6-1, benefitting from two unearned runs off an error.

Nokomis did their best to come back from the deficit as they touched up Connor Henneman for four unearned runs on three hits and two errors, with Matthew Ulrici delivering the big blow of the inning with a two-run double that scored Benny Clavin and Aumann. Ulrici would later come around to score on a wild pitch, while Brenton Lyons, who reached on an error after the extra-base knock, scored on a single by Ryan Eisenbarth.

Austin Thornton would set the Indians down in order to give Nokomis a chance in the bottom of the seventh, but Hennemann would get out of a jam and end the game with the tying run on third base.

Both teams would have seven hits and three errors in the contest, with Ulrici leading Nokomis with a two-hit night.

Hunter Broers took the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and three walks with three strikeouts. Thornton would throw the last four innings, allowing one earned run on two hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Michael Angeli got the win for Pawnee, allowing one run on three hits in three and two-thirds innings.

Now 2-4 on the year, Nokomis will have a rematch with Mt. Olive on May 13 on the Wildcats’ home field, followed by a round robin tournament at Tri-City on May 15.
