Redskins Improve To 4-0 In Conference Play

The Nokomis girls basketball team put everything together on Monday, Jan. 10, and came away with a 54-37 victory over South Fork on the Ponies’ home floor in Kincaid.

The Redskins hit nine threes in the game and had a potent inside force in the form of Audrey Sabol to pick up their fourth MSM Conference win in as many chances.

Four of the threes came in the first quarter as Nokomis jumped out to a 22-9 lead. Addison Dangbar had one of the threes and led Nokomis with seven points, while Natalie Engelman chipped in two triples and Hailey Engelman had one.

The Engelman cousins added two more threes in the second quarter, helping Nokomis to boost their lead by four points, making it 36-19 at halftime. Sabol, who scored six points in the first, added six more in the second quarter and led the team with 12 points at the break.

Any hopes of a rally by South Fork were dashed in the second half as Dangbar went off in the third quarter. The junior guard knocked down three threes to boost her point total to 16 as  Nokomis led 49-24 with eight minutes to go.

Scoring slowed for the Redskins in the fourth as Coach Brandon Engelman rested his starters, which allowed South Fork to outscore Nokomis 13-5 in the final frame. Still, the outcome was never in doubt in the fourth as Nokomis finished off the 17-point win, their 15th of the season.

Nokomis was almost as good from three-point range as they were from inside the arc on Monday, as they went 9-for-22 (41 percent) from three and 11-for-21 from two (52 percent). They also hit 5-of-6 free throws in the win,

Addison Dangbar shot 50 percent from three, making four of her eight attempts for 12 of her team-best 16 points. She also had four rebounds, three assists and three steals for Nokomis.

Audrey Sabol led Nokomis in rebounding with seven and also had 13 points, one of four Redskins to score in double figures.

Natalie Engelman and Hailey Engelman were the other two, netting 11 and 10 respectively, but the pair also contributed in other areas. Natalie added in four rebounds, five assists and two steals, while Hailey had a team-best seven assists, two  rebounds and a steal.

Emma Sneddon and Carley King rounded out the scoring for the Redskins, who moved to 15-5 on the year and 4-0 in the MSM Conference.

Nokomis was scheduled to play Staunton on Saturday, Jan. 15, but that game has been cancelled. Coach Engelman is looking for a replacement, but one had not been announced by press time. If one isn’t found, Nokomis’ next game will be on Thursday, Jan. 20, when they host the Lincolnwood Lancers.
