Redskins Fall For McGivney's Ninth Win

For the first time this year, the Nokomis girls basketball team found themselves on the losing side of the scoreboard for the second straight game, but the end result of the Lady Redskins’ 64-33 loss to Father McGivney had more to do with the quality of their opponent than any giant flaw the Skins needed to fix.

The Glen Carbon-based Griffins are 9-1 this year, with their only loss coming against powerhouse Breese Mater Dei on Feb. 22.

On Monday, McGivney started out strong and never looked back as they put four players in double figures, with another scoring nine points off the bench.

With five players combining for 16 points, McGivney led 16-9 after one and 33-18 at halftime. Nokomis’ scoring stayed fairly steady in the second half with quarters of eight and seven, but the Griffins exploded for 24 points in the third to virtually put the game away.

Rachel Maller led McGivney in scoring with 15 points as she went 4-of-7 from three-point land. Emma Martinez went 3-of-4 from deep, accounting for nine of her 11 points, while Mary Harkins hit the Griffins’ eighth three and finished with nine points. Anna McKee (11) and Charlize Luehmann (12) also reached double figures for McGivney, who shot 32 percent from the field (they went 8-of-28 from three), but made 14 of their 18 free throws.

Nokomis shot better than McGivney, making 36 percent of their shots, but took half as many chances, going 12-of-33 compared to 21-of-64 for the Griffins.

Kristen Stauder led Nokomis in scoring with 12 points, going 4-of-9 from the field and 4-of-6 from the charity stripe. Stauder also had four rebounds and two steals in the loss.

Audrey Sabol led Nokomis in rebounding with six boards and was second in scoring with nine points.

Mia Fesser added four points and a team-best three assists, while Natalie Engelman (three), Addison Dangbar (three) and Cydney Bertolino (two) also scored for Nokomis.

The Redskins’ schedule did not get much easier after Monday’s match-up as Pana awaited on Wednesday, March 10, followed by the season finale on Saturday, March 13, at 3 p.m. against East Alton-Wood River, a team they beat by just three points earlier in the season.
