After a pair of thrilling three-set losses against Hillsboro and Lincolnwood, the Nokomis High School volleyball team has been red hot.
In their last three games, the Redskins haven’t dropped a set as they improved to 8-16 on the season and pulled Coach Megan Mehochko’s win total to within four of 200 for her career.
The latest victories in the win streak came on Oct. 4 and 5, with Nokomis winning 25-18, 25-19 at Pawnee and 25-13, 25-15 at home against Tri-City.
Game one of the win over Pawnee would go back-and-forth as the two teams tied six times before Nokomis went up 8-7 and never trailed again. That doesn’t mean the Redskins had it easy, though. Pawnee battled back from down seven to pull within one, 19-18, before Nokomis got the sideout on a block at the net.
Another block, two straight kills, a Pawnee error and an ace allowed Nokomis to close out game one without giving up another point to the home team.
In game two, the Redskins led wire-to-wire, jumping out to a 7-2 lead in the early going. Pawnee would get as close as two, 10-8, during the game, but Nokomis maintained a healthy lead and were up by as many as eight before the Indians cut the margin slightly for a final score of 25-19.
Audrey Sabol led the team in service points (8) and kills (6), while Addison Dangbar had six points and a team-best nine digs. Hailey Engelman led the team in assists, posting 8 in the game.
The win over Tri-City would be even more decisive as they downed the Tornadoes by 12 and 10 points respectively.
Nokomis led for much of the game, but the score was tied at 6-6 before the Redskins went on a 7-1 run. The Tornadoes would get within three points at 13-10, but Nokomis peeled eight straight points to take an insurmountable lead and the win in the first set.
In game two, things were similar as Tri-City led 13-10 at one point, before another eight-point run by the Redskins put any comeback hopes to rest.
The closest Tri-City would get after that is six points as Nokomis closed out their eighth win of the season, 25-15.
Skylar Stewart had a big game for the Redskins with team highs in points (10) and blocks (four), while also contributing four kills in the win. Audrey Sabol added in five kills, while Hailey Engelman had nine assists and eight service points. Presley Lamb also had seven assists, while also leading the team in digs with 13.
To keep their win streak alive, Nokomis will have to beat a solid North Mac team that will be on the Redskins’ home court this Thursday, Oct. 7.
