Redskins Beat Comets In Rematch

Posted

Less than two weeks after beating Greenville by three on the Comets’ home floor, the Nokomis girls basketball team welcomed the Comets to Redskin Territory for the T. Todt Shootout on Saturday, Dec. 11.

In the first meeting, Nokomis rallied back from a 17-point deficit to score a 42-39 victory over Greenville. Saturday’s game would be just as close, with Nokomis winning 42-37 in overtime, but this time it was the Comets who erased an early deficit to put a scare into the Redskins.

The two teams would go point-for-point in the first quarter, with Audrey Sabol scoring all seven of Nokomis’ points to give her team a 7-5 lead.

Sabol stayed hot, scoring seven more points in the second quarter, with Addison Dangbar adding in a three to help the Redskins to a 17-10 lead with two minutes to play.

Greenville would charge back, though, getting a free throw from Abby Sussenbach and threes from Charlee Stearns and Mia Emken to tie the game at 17 apiece.

Nokomis picked up the first three points of the third quarter off an Emma Sneddon free throw and a field goal by Cydney Bertolino, but Greenville answered with a three by Stearns and a two by Sussenbach to give them their first lead since the midway point of the first quarter.

Greenville led by as many as six late in the third quarter, but back-to-back baskets by Sabol and Hailey Engelman cut the lead to 26-24 going into the fourth quarter.

The lead would volley back and forth in the fourth quarter, with neither team leading by more than two points. Sneddon gave Nokomis a 35-33 lead with 2:31 left in regulation, but the Redskins were held scoreless the rest of the way out. Greenville wouldn’t light up the nets in that span either, but did get a game-tying basket from Lilly Funneman with 30 seconds to play to send the game to overtime.

Mia Emken gave the Comets a 37-35 lead, but that would be the only points of the four-minute overtime for Greenville. Nokomis would be held without a field goal, but went 7-of-12 from the free-throw line to collect the win.

Audrey Sabol finished with 21 points and a season-best 14 rebounds for her third double-double of the season, while Emma Sneddon added in 10 points and a team-high four assists.

Addison Dangbar finished with four points, followed by Natalie Engelman with three (all off free throws in the overtime period), Hailey Engelman with two and Cydney Bertolino with two.

Now 8-3 and winners of five straight, Nokomis will be back at home on Tuesday, Dec. 14, to take on Pawnee.
