Quarton Second To None At Highland Invitational

It was a good race for the Litchfield High School cross country team, but an even better one for their top runner at the Highland Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 18.

Litchfield sophomore Camden Quarton beat out 75 other varsity runners at the event to pick up his first win as a high school runner. Quarton clocked in at 16:16.50 to take the top spot, beating Jackson Collman of Civic Memorial by 3.7 seconds. Only eight runners broke 17 minutes, with Quarton topping that list.

As a team, Litchfield finished sixth with 157 points. The top five teams would all be bigger schools, with Marion taking the top spot, followed by Champaign Central, Highland, Christian Brothers College and Carbondale.

Litchfield’s Sam Horn finished in the top half of the field with a time of 18:38.40, good enough for 32nd in the field, while Gavin Thimsen was 50th with a 20:07.60.

Alex DeLaCruz finished just behind Thimsen in 52nd, clocking in at 20:27.90, while Peyton Baugher and Cy Cress were 71st and 74th respectively. Baugher ran a 25:45.00 for the Panthers, while Cress ran a 29:03.30.

The Litchfield girls would finish seventh in their race, posting 202 points. Highland earned the win on their home course with 41 points, followed by Champaign Central, Father McGivney, Civic Memorial, Columbia and Jerseyville.

Myka Fenton ran a 23:05.60 to earn a top 25 spot in the field of 71 varsity runners, while Kylee Eiting wasn’t far behind, running a 23:19.80 to finish 30th.

Twenty spots behind her was Delanie Ulrich, who ran a 25:50.70, while Harley Traylor ran a 28:21.80 to finish 61st. Sisters Joelle and Emma Hughes rounded out the Litchfield lineup with a 70th and 71st place finish, running times of 32:24.00 and 33:33.90.

More large schools await in the Panthers’ next meet, the Springfield Invite at Lincoln Park on Saturday, Sept. 25. After that Litchfield will host their home meet at the Litchfield Country Club at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 28.
