Camden Quarton and Myka Fenton both finished in the top five individually at the PORTA Invite on Saturday, Sept. 11, as the Panthers made the trip to Petersburg for the annual event.
Quarton ran a 17:18.1 to finish third overall, 10 seconds behind Haven Gronewold of PORTA and 47 seconds behind champion Sam Springfer of Delavan.
As a team, the Litchfield boys finished fourth, coming in behind Delavan, PORTA and Quincy Notre Dame.
In addition to Quarton, Kevin Pollard picked up 13th for the Panthers, running a 19:20.3. Gavin Thimsen and Alex DeLaCruz just missed top 25 finishes with times of 20:23.2 and 20:33.7, good enough for 27th and 29th, while Cy Cress ran a 21:09.2 to finish 32nd.
Kenny Traylor was just 16 seconds behind Cress, running a 21:27.4 to finish 34th, while Peyton Baugher ran a 26:51.7 to finish 55th.
Fenton finished fourth in her race, coming in behind Rushville-Industry’s Katie Park, Quincy Notre Dame’s Teresa Drotar and Athens’ Riley Womble. Her time of 21:55.4 was one of just four female times under 22 minutes for the day.
Harley Traylor joined Fenton in the top 25 with a time of 25:27.6, as she finished 25th, three seconds ahead of teammate Delanie Ulrich, who ran a 25:30.9 to finish 26th.
Kylee Eiting clocked in at 27:30.1 to finish 34th overall, while Joelle and Emma Hughes finished 52nd and 53rd with times of 36:49.9 and 37:01.6.
The Litchfield cross country team was in Greenville on Sept. 14, for the Comets invitational, but lightning forced the cancellation of the race before it was complete.
Myka Fenton, Kylee Eiting and Harley Traylor all finished before Mother Nature’s fury and claimed spots in the top six. Fenton was second with a time of 25:24, with Altamont’s Grace Nelson the only one to beat her time, coming in at 23:25. Eiting was third with a time of 25:39, while Harley Traylor was sixth with a time of 28:03.
No time was listed for either the remaining Litchfield girls, nor the Hillsboro girls cross country team, who were also in attendance.
The boys’ side was more fortunate and able to get a few more runners across the finish line, enough to have final team standings.
Litchfield would take first with 18 points, followed by Altamont with 56, Staunton with 64 and Greenville with 85.
Camden Quarton, Sam Horn and Kevin Pollard finished 1-2-3 in the race, while Gavin Thimsen, Alex DeLaCruz and Kenny Traylor were all in the top 10.
Quarton ran an 18:46 to take the top spot, followed by Horn with a 19:51 and Pollard with a 20:28. Thimsen rounded out the top five with a 20:58, coming within two seconds of fourth place Jason Kallman of Altamont.
DeLaCruz and Traylor finished seventh and eighth with times of 21:50 and 21:53, while Peyton Baugher and Cy Cress rounded out the field for the Panthers with times of 28:33 and 31:15.
Litchfield will compete in the Highland Invite this Saturday, Sept. 18, at the Alhambra Fireman and Legion Park. The Hillsboro girls cross country team is off until Sept. 28, when they join Litchfield and Hillsboro at the Panthers’ lone home meet.
