Purple Panthers Beat Calhoun In Carlinville

Litchfield Purple Panthers would move to 2-0 in pool play in the Carlinville Holiday tournament on Tuesday evening as they defeated the Calhoun Warriors 73-65.  The win would move the Purple Panthers to 7-5 overall and drop Calhoun to 4-7 overall.

These two teams have not been strangers since the Warriors joined the Carlinville Holiday Tournament in 2018.  The Purple Panthers and the Warriors have met in both 2018 and 2019, where the Warriors defeated the Purple Panthers in both contests including the 2018 showdown where Calhoun knocked off Litchfield 73-67.  Sam Painter would put in 36 points in that contest, Keenan Powell would give that total a try Tuesday evening as he poured in 33 points.

Powell would start the night with nine of the 18 first quarter points Litchfield would score, as Litchfield might have put together the best complete quarter of the year. Forcing 11 turnovers and only allowing Calhoun to shoot the ball seven times, Litchfield would be able to build a 18-8 lead after a quarter of action.

The defensive clinic by Litchfield would lead Litchfield to 21 total field goal attempts in the first quarter as Litchfield would have five Purple Panthers score in the quarter including Powell.

Litchfield would not take their foot off the gas pedal in the second quarter as they would begin the quarter on a 7-2 run.  That run would build Litchfield’s lead to 25-10.  Litchfield’s leading scorer on the year, who was held to only one field goal in the first quarter, would add five of the seven points put on the board in the opening minutes.

Again, though, it would be Litchfield’s defense that would be the talk. After forcing 11 turnovers in the opening quarter, the Purple Panthers defense would force eight more turnovers in the second quarter.

Calhoun would put up three more shots than they did in the first quarter, as they would only be allowed ten total shots in the second quarter.  From inside the arc, Litchfield would almost be lights out as they would connect on five of their 14 total shots, leading to a 36-18 halftime lead. Powell would lead all scorers at the half as he would nearly outscore his opponent with 13 first half points.

With the impressive first half behind them, the Purple Panthers would look to continue their success in the second half. Calhoun would have an answer to the Purple Panthers though, as the Warriors would make some adjustments in the locker room.

Calhoun would give a valid attempt to turn the ball game around throughout the second half as they would outscore Litchfield 44-37 in the second half.

After Litchfield would increase their lead to 46-25 in the third quarter, Calhoun would make a push and  outscore Litchfield 14-4.

The push by the Warriors would drop Litchfield’s lead to ten points with two minutes to play in the quarter, 46-36.  Litchfield would be able to move the lead to eleven before the quarter would expire as they would hold onto a 50-39 lead after three quarters.

In the final frame, the Warriors would continue to make a push at the Purple Panthers’ lead as they would drop Litchfield’s lead to single digits. Calhoun would get within eight points early in the quarter as they would outscore Litchfield 6-3.

They would be able to come within four points late in the quarter 64-60 but the Purple Panthers would outscore the Warriors 9-5 in the final minutes to secure the win, 73-65.

Keenan Powell would once again make a splash in a quarter as he would add 15 points to his total in the quarter as he would finish with 33 points.

The win would give Litchfield their third straight win and a step closer to the championship game of the Carlinville Holiday Tournament. It was a needed statement win, as Litchfield’s wins have come to teams with a combined winning percentage of .241, while their losses have come to teams with a  combined winning percentage of .609.
