Progress Pushes Lady Toppers In 2020

Progress. That’s been the key this year for the Hillsboro girls golf team. And while the Lady Hiltoppers saw their season come to a close at the Taylorville Regional on Wednesday, Oct. 7, the team did what they’ve done all season long - showed progress.

All four players who teed off for the Toppers in the 2019 regional improved their scores at the 2020 version of the postseason.

Alex Frailey, who led the Toppers on Wednesday, made the biggest jump from her freshman year last year. Frailey, who shot a 133 at the Okaw Valley Regional in 2019, carded a 105 to finish 27th overall, a 28 shot improvement. Frailey also got better as the day went on, shooting a 54 on the back nine to start the day, then finishing with a 51 on the front nine, including a par on the par-5 second hole.

Meagan Jorn and Anna Colwell tied for 33rd as each shot 107 for 18 holes. Jorn made a 22 shot improvement over last year and had two pars on the day, while Colwell improved by 14 strokes and was steady with rounds of 54 and 53 at Lakeshore.

Aurelie Granito would shoot a 154 last year at Okaw Valley, but improved nine strokes this year with a 145 on Wednesday.

In addition to the returnees, Sam Frailey and Gracie Brink also played for Coach Bob Allen’s club, making their regional debuts. Frailey would be Hillsboro’s other scoring round with a 131 as she shot a 70 on the back nine to start the day, then finished with a 61 on the front nine to finish in 68th place overall. Brink would finish 73rd overall with a 140, shooting a 70 on the back nine then replicating that number on the front half of the course.

The individual improvements resulted in a significant improvement in their team score, going from a 482 to a 450, even if they would finish six spots lower in the standings. That’s more of a testament to the strength of the regional, which was won by Sacred Heart-Griffin with a 333, with Auburn grabbing the other team spot with a 367.

“Honestly, I’m happy with the season. Everyone improved all year,” Coach Allen said. “It’s a tough course and would have taken an 86 to get out. I’m looking forward to next season.”

Next season the theme remains the same, but maybe with goals a little higher. The Toppers lose just one player, Colwell, so the opportunity is there for the returning players to continue to improve in 2021.
