The Hillsboro High School softball team took on PORTA on Thursday, April 22, on the Bluejays’ home field in Petersburg.
The Jays, who co-op with AC-Central, would defend their home turf in fine fashion, beating Hillsboro 10-0 in a five-inning no-hitter.
PORTA was held scoreless in the first inning, but made up for lost time with five runs in the second and three runs in the third. After scoring one in the fourth inning, the Bluejays invoked the 10-run rule and closed out the five-inning win with a solo tally in the bottom of the fifth.
Three pitchers would combine for the no-hitter as Addy McClure, Gabbie Branson and Amber Teimeyer faced just one over the minimum, with Hillsboro’s only base runner reaching on an error.
Taelyn Smith would take the loss for Hillsboro on the mound, striking out three batters in her four and a third innings on the mound. She gave up 12 hits and walked three batters.
Hillsboro will be back at home on Monday, April 26, when they face Taylorville, followed by a road trip to North Mac on Tuesday, April 27.
