Three goals in eight minutes turned a hard fought battle into a rout on Monday, Oct. 4, as the Carlinville boys soccer team defeated Lincolnwood 5-0 on Kickin’ For A Cure night at Cavalier Field.
Clad in purple jerseys in support of the Macoupin County Relay For Life team, the Cavaliers came on fast and furious from the opening kick. Levi Yudinsky, one of two seniors for Carlinville, broke free in the opening two minutes and drilled a point-blank shot at Gabe Armentrout, which the Lancer sophomore saved.
Yudinsky and forwards Paeton Brown and Trieton Park continued the assault on the Lincolnwood defense, but the quartet of Luke Webb, Reece Lohman, Levi Weir and Braden Whalen managed to keep the Cavies off the board for the opening 10 minutes.
Another near miss came with 30:11 on the clock when Yudinsky tried to go near post and Armentrout got an arm up to knock the ball out of play. The Cavies would serve up the ensuing corner into the box, but the Lancers cleared the ball out of harm’s way.
Yudinsky’s nose for the goal finally paid off with 14:21 left in the half on a play that started with a ball from Paeton Brown pelted in between a defender and Armentrout to the far post. The Carlinville midfielder made a run on Brown’s “shass” (part shot, part pass) and followed it into the back of the net for the game’s first score.
Lincolnwood’s best chance came immediately after the goal as Austin Thornton sprinted down the right side and drilled a high shot toward the goal. Carlinville keeper Will Meyer leapt at the last moment and got a hand on Thornton’s sure goal to preserve his shutout.
With 5:46 to play in the half, Carlinville struck again. Paeton Brown corralled a ball in the middle of the box and put a low, off-balanced shot to the right of the Lincolnwood keeper.
Lincolnwood would have a few chances late in the first half, mostly from Thornton, but they trailed 2-0 at the break.
The Lancers tried to equal climb back into the game in the early going of the second, but Meyer and the Carlinville defense turned them away time after time. At the midpoint of the second half, Carlinville padded their lead, with Trieton Park doing the heavy lifting on the offensive end.
With 19:05 left on the clock, Park received a throw-in and chipped a shot over Armentrout to make it 3-0. Goals continued to come in waves for “King Trieton” as the senior forward scored twice more on a breakaway five minutes later and a broken play with 11:34 to go when the ball, Park, Armentrout and a Lincolnwood defender all reached the same point at the same time. The result was Carlinville’s fifth goal and the third prong of Park’s hat trick.
Lincolnwood tried to break up the shutout late in the game as Wyatt Kistner sent a ball into the box, which Levi Weir one-timed toward the near post. Meyer was able to make another terrific save as he finished off the shutout and Carlinville’s 15th win of the season.
The loss was the Lancers’ first in six games as they moved to 10-6-1 on the season, with one more game on tap before regionals. Lincolnwood ends the season with another tough test on Thursday, Oct. 7, at Williamsville, against the 14-5-1 Williamsville Bullets, who beat Bloomington Central Catholic on Monday.
Next week, Lincolnwood will be the regional host and will take on Teutopolis in the semifinal at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 13. Carlinville looms on the other side of the bracket, with the Cavies set to face the winner of Saturday’s match between Vandalia and Pana in the other semifinal at 5 p.m. on Wednesday at Terry Todt Field in Raymond.
