So far this season, it hasn’t been if someone will step up for the Litchfield boys golf team, but who. The 12-2 Panthers have been the picture of consistency, not just in their varsity but several players deep in the JV ranks as well.
The latest example of this came Wednesday, Sept. 16, when the Panthers defeated Staunton 177 to 185.
Ten Litchfield players shot 50 or better at the Litchfield Country Club, with three more within five strokes of that threshold.
Tug Schwab, whose nine hole average has hovered around the 40 mark, earned medalist honors for the fifth time this season with a 3-over-par 38. That score was three better than the runner-up, Preston Denney, who led Staunton with a 41.
Zach Boston and Ian Otto would back Schwab with a pair of 45s, while AJ Odle, Cam Frerichs and Drew Hartzell all shot 49s on the day to tie for the fourth scoring round.
Those six players made up the varsity, but the JV wasn’t far off the pace of that group, shooting a 195 overall. Ryan Baugher and Brawly Jacobs finished with a pair of 48s, while Haydan Brown added a 49.
Keagan Marten was the first in the 50s, shooting an even 50, followed by Zach Leitschuh (51), Carter Powell (53), Blaine Stewart (54) and Allen Schneider (59). Tyler Thompson (62), Kelvin Dooley (67) and Mitchell Floyd (69) rounded out the JV players for LHS.
Ultimately, Thursday’s match was more about the journey than the getting there as both teams gained some valuable experience, especially for the younger players.
Litchfield will take on Greenville, Southwestern and Pana at Indian Springs on Monday, Sept. 21, followed by a rematch with Hillsboro on Sept. 22, with Carlinville and Mt. Olive also teeing off at the Hillsboro Country Club.
