For the second time this year, the Litchfield boys golf team played one of their best rounds in a match against one of the state’s top teams.
A week after shooting a season-best 161 at the Vandalia Country Club, the Panthers carded a stellar 154 as a team to take second in a match on their home course at the Litchfield Country Club on Wednesday, Sept. 22.
Vandalia had beaten Litchfield by 18 strokes in Fayette County, but the margin was much closer on Wednesday as the Vandals shot a 149 to edge the Panthers by five strokes. Staunton (183) and Gillespie (198) finished third and fourth, while Southwestern also sent players to the match.
The Vandals would have the top two scorers in Chase Laack, who shot a 2-under-par 33, and Conner McCall, who finished with an even-par 35, but three Panthers tied Vandalia’s Dylan Halford for third overall at 38.
Tug Schwab, Ian Otto and Zach Boston, who shot a career-best on his home course, were the backbone of the Panther effort on Wednesday with their trio of 3-over-par rounds.
Litchfield also gained some ground with their number four man as both A.J. Odle and Keagan Marten shot 40s, three strokes better than Vandalia’s number four, Jonah Beesley. Kelvin Dooley rounded out the lineup for the Litchfield varsity, shooting a 46 on the night.
Litchfield’s JV squad also put up some solid numbers, shooting a 176, which would have beaten both Staunton and Gillespie.
Brawly Jacobs led the second team with a 42, while Clayton Bishop was just a stroke behind him with a 43. Ryan Baugher and Zach Leitschuh were also in the mid-40s with a 45 and a 46.
In addition to the top four, Allen Schneider and Jackson Painter both shot 55, Dominick Ellinger shot a 59 and Ethan Witt shot a 62.
The Panthers, 18-4, will be at Indian Springs on Monday, Sept. 20, for a test run of the South Central Conference course near Fillmore. After that, they play Carlinville and Hillsboro at the Carlinville Country Club.
