Panthers Get Senior Night Win Over Hawks, Toppers


It was senior night for the Litchfield wrestling team on Wednesday, May 19 as the Panthers welcomed Hillsboro and Riverton to Simmons Gymnasium.

Seniors Will Carlile, Carter Powell, Aaron Roach and Caleb Jurgena were all honored during the meet, with the soon-to-be graduates also all collecting wins in the Panthers’ match with Riverton, which they won 46-12.

The Panthers would go 4-0 in contested matches and scored forfeit wins from Carter Powell (120), Brady Davidson (132), Caleb Jurgena (138) and Nick Hawley (152). 

Three of the four contested victories would come by fall, including a first period pin at 160 pounds by Colten Hester over Kenny Spaniol with 30 seconds left in the round. The two other pins would come from 113-pounder Alex Powell, who pinned Connor Park with six seconds left in the second period, and 145-pounder Aaron Roach, who pinned Gavin Park with 55 seconds left in the second period.

The other win came from Will Carlile, who stepped up to wrestle at 170 pounds and defeated Collin Ripperda by major decision. All of the Hawks’ points coming from a pair of forfeits at 195 and 285 pounds.


Litchfield would also claim a win over their rivals from down Rt. 16 with a 42-24 victory over Hillsboro.

The Panthers would hold a 5-1 advantage in contested matches, with Hillsboro claiming three forfeit wins and Litchfield picking up two forfeit victories.

Will Carlile and Carter Powell both picked up wins by fall on senior night, with Carlile pinning Jaben Compton with 1:13 left in the first period of the 170-pound match and Powell pinning Griffin Hughes 34 seconds into the second period of the 120-pound match.

Litchfield’s other wins came from Alex Powell, who pinned Keegan Murray at the 2:39 mark; Brady Davidson, who pinned Ben Huber at the 1:10 mark and Ashtin Carver, who pinned Matt Page at the 1:05 mark.

Hillsboro’s win came at 152 pounds, where Zander Wells pinned Kaleb Crabtree with four seconds left in the second period. The Toppers would fare better against Riverton, who they would beat.

Both Litchfield and Hillsboro will be participating in the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association State Tournament, which will be held in Springfield on June 24. Both teams are in the Sacred Heart-Griffin Super Regional, which will be held on June 13, with the sectional set for June 19 in Lawrenceville.
