For the second time in three games the Litchfield-Gillespie boys soccer team took the field against Carlinville, this time on the Panthers’ home field in Litchfield.
While both games ended in a Carlinville victory, the 4-1 result on Sept. 8 was much better for the Panthers than the 7-0 loss to the Cavies on Aug. 31.
Carlinville got on the board first, with Matt Dunn setting up Levi Yudinsky for the first of Yudinsky’s three goals in the match. That goal came just under 20 minutes into the first half and it would be another 15 until anyone else found the back of the net.
When the offense did awaken, it would be the Panthers who benefitted. Drake Gasperson netted his team-best fourth goal off a pass from Keenan Logan, tying the game at 1-1 with five minutes to play in the first half.
The goal may have lit a fire under the Cavaliers, who scored twice more before time expired in the half. Just 35 seconds after Gasperson tied the game at 1-1, Yudinsky scored goal number two off a steal and breakaway.
Three minutes later, Tyler Summers would take a pass from Matt Reiher and make his way through the Litchfield defense for the third goal of the first half for the Cavaliers.
After the break, Yudinsky completed his hat trick, scoring off a header when Summers sent a cross toward the box 13 minutes into the second half.
The result could have been more lopsided had it not been for senior goalkeeper Cameron Crow, who kept the Panthers in the game. Crow had 11 saves in the first half, plus three more in the second as Carlinville outshot Litchfield 18-5 in the contest.
The Panthers’ next game would be another repeat from the Carlinville tournament as they played Springfield Lutheran for the second time. In the previous meeting, which was their second game that day, Litchfield lost 4-1 to the Crusaders.
Saturday’s meeting in Springfield wouldn’t go as well as the Crusaders scored four times in the first half en route to a 7-0 victory.
Now 0-8, Litchfield will play their second South Central Conference game on Tuesday, Sept. 14, at Greenville.
