Panther Battle Goes To Pana This Time

On Tuesday, March 9, the Litchfield Purple Panthers would begin their last week of their 2021 campaign as they welcomed the Pana Panthers to Simmons Gym. Pana’s version of the Panther would be victorious in the battle of the Panthers with by a 66-34 final score. 

In the opening quarter, Coach Drew Logan would have his Purple Panthers rolling against the 10-3 Pana Panthers. Even though the Pana squad came out of the quarter with a 14-8 advantage, Litchfield threw everything they had at the visitors. 

Litchfield would get four scorers in the scorebook as Gavin Thimsen, Jace Stewart, Jordan Harris and Carson Saathoff all connected on field goals. 

Litchfield would narrow the Pana lead to four points in the opening minutes of the second quarter as they connected on the first field goal of the quarter. 

After a close contest the night before, Pana would not want to be in another close battle. They would quickly put Litchfield behind them as they responded to Litchfield’s early basket with a 14-0 run. The big run by Pana would allow them to create a 28-10 lead. 

Litchfield would be able to put a stop to the Pana run and close out the quarter on a strong note. Litchfield would outscore Pana in the final minutes of the half 6-5, as Pana would control a 33-16 lead at the half. 

Four Purple Panthers would score in the quarter as Clayton Bishop, Chase Hires, Keenan Powell and Jordan Harris would all add baskets. Harris’ second basket of the half allowed him to lead Litchfield in scoring, with four points, as seven different Purple Panthers scored in the first half. 

Pana came out of the gates in the second half firing on all cylinders as they would increase their lead to 52-18. The 19-2 run to start the quarter would be led by Colin Schmitz. Schmitz, who scored 11 points in the first half, would pile on 17 points in the quarter as Pana would hold a 60-25 lead after three quarters of action. 

Blaine Stewart would lead Litchfield in the quarter as he put five points on the board. 

Trailing by 35 entering the final frame, the Purple Panthers would continue to look to build on getting better. Litchfield would be able to take a positive step as they would outscore the Panthers 9-6. 

Keenan Powell would connect on three points in the quarter, finishing with seven points and leading 11 Purple Panthers in the scoring column. 

The 66-34 defeat would drop Litchfield to 1-9 overall and 1-8 in the South Central Conference as the Pana Panthers would improve to 11-3 overall and 8-1 in the SCC. 

Litchfield wrapped up their season on Wednesday, March 10, when they welcomed the Vandals to Litchfield.
