Well-timed hitting and a solid performance from Pana pitcher Kiley Ladage led to a win for the visitors on Tuesday, June 1, as Litchfield fell to Pana 13-2 in six innings.
Ladage struck out 11 and only allowed three hits in the game, the first of which didn’t come until the fourth inning, when Litchfield scored both of their runs.
After a ground ball back to the mound for out number one, Lauren Monke broke up Ladage’s no-hitter with a single for Litchfield. Pana would record the second out quickly, but ran into trouble when Ashley Hickerson reached on a swinging bunt.
The Pana first baseman would field Hickerson’s hit and tried to get the Litchfield centerfielder at first base, but the throw missed its mark and allowed Monke to score from second base.
Another Pana miscue put runners on the corners for Litchfield as Hickerson took second on a passed ball and moved to third when Emma Walch reached on a dropped third strike. Senior Bri Jeffers would come up big with a single past the shortstop, which allowed Hickerson to score Litchfield’s second run of the game.
The downside of the game came on either side of Litchfield’s big inning as Pana scored seven runs before Litchfield got on the board (three in the second and four in the third) and six runs after the fourth inning (four in the fifth and two in the sixth).
The two runs in the sixth gave Pana an 11-run lead, with Litchfield needing to score at least twice to send the game to the seventh. Ladage made that challenging as she struck out the first two batters in the bottom of the sixth and got Jeffers to pop up to catcher Jaylen Boswell, who made a good catch in foul territory to end the game.
In addition to singles by Monke, Hickerson and Jeffers in the fourth inning, Litchfield also got a triple from Bella Roach in the fifth. After two attempts at a slap hit, Roach smoked a fly ball over the head of the Pana right fielder that nearly left the park. Ladage would settle down after that though, getting the next two batters on a liner to short and a pop up to the catcher to end the threat.
Emma Walch would handle pitching duties for Litchfield, allowing 13 runs (10 earned) on 10 hits, 13 walks and a hit batsman. Walch also struck out two batters during her six innings of work.
The loss moved Litchfield to 0-13 on the season as they entered Wednesday’s regional game in Auburn. Unfortunately, win number one proved to be difficult to come by as the Trojans defeated Litchfield 11-1.
