October Meeting Of Nokomis School Board

The Nokomis School Board met at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 19 in its regular meeting. Superintendent Dr. Scott Doerr’s report covered the latest budget picture and updated the board on  Regional Office of School Trustees activities. The board took action on a number of personnel issues.

Board President Chad Ruppert called the meeting to order and board members Janssen, Kettelkamp, Bauman, Fesser, and Gasparich answered the roll. Board member Tarter was absent. The board approved the Consent Agenda, which included prior meeting minutes, bill payments, payroll, and the treasurer’s report.

Head Basketball Coach Dan DeWerff addressed the board regarding Policy 6:195, Extra-Curricular Activities. Specifically, the discussion revolved around allowing practices and other events to take place on Sunday and some holidays. The board will continue the discussion at the next meeting of the board.

Dr. Doerr shared the monthly financial spreadsheet which shows that the State owes the district over $82,000 in driver’s education payments. The Illinois State Board of Education has processed the vouchers, but the State Treasurer has not yet made the payments. Reimbursements for federal grants, early childhood grants, and Evidence-Based Funding grants are up-to-date.

It was reported that the Regional Office of Education Board of School Trustees met and held a detachment and annexation hearing to detach a parcel of property from the Panhandle School District and annex it into the Nokomis district. The petition was approved and will take effect July 1, 2022.

In other board action, the body accepted letters of resignation from Rebekah Simpson,  Vickie Loskot, and Amanda Kettelkamp. The employment of Erin Lawhorn as a special education aide was approved, as was the employment of Heath Tolberd and Jake McDonald as full-time custodians upon review of their background checks. Tolberd will be stationed at the high school; McDonald at the North Elementary School.

The board also took action to approve Joe Gasparich as the district’s delegate to the Illinois Association of School Board’s annual Delegate Assembly.
