Norma Elaine (VanGieson) King, 97, of Pawnee, died on Wednesday, March 24, 2021, at her home.

Visitation will be held Thursday, April 1, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Bramley Funeral Home in Auburn. Funeral services will follow, beginning at 12 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Nick Oyler officiating. Burial will be held at Brush Creek Cemetery in Divernon. 

Mrs. King was born May 9, 1923, in Pawnee, to Lewis Ray and Lela (Starkweather) VanGieson. She married Doyle Cook, and they later divorced. She later married James “Earl” King on Dec. 22, 1963, and he preceded her in death in 2003.

During her career, she worked at IL National Ins/AIG for 27-and-a-half years, retiring in 1986 as an executive secretary. She then served as a secretary at Lewis Memorial Christian Village for 11-and-a-half years until March 1999.

Mrs. King was a member of Auburn Christian Church since 1964, where she was pianist and later organist for 29 years. She was also a secretary for the church for over 30 years. Additionally, she served as organist for Bramley Funeral Home for 11 years. Music was an important part of her life.

She was a member of Auburn Senior Citizen Choir and Auburn Chatham Homemaker Unit and bowled in their league.

Mrs. King is survived by two daughters, Karen Bilbruck of Auburn and Kathy (Fred) Ellis of Pawnee; son, George “Sonny” (companion Jean Wellman) Cook of Girard; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Seiders of Farmersville and Shirley DeHeve of Auburn; brother, Merle (Linda) VanGieson of Enosburge, VT; niece, Cindy Seiders; and two nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; and daughters, Leona Lee in infancy and Barbara Ann Cook in 1988.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Auburn Christian Church or a charity of the donor’s choice.
