With the return of Hailey Engelman and Audrey Sabol, the Nokomis High School volleyball team didn’t pick up a win on Thursday, Sept. 9, but they made big strides in a close three-set loss to Meridian.
The Redskins took game one on their home court 25-21, then nearly pulled off the sweep before the Hawks emerged with a 26-24 win in game two. The visitors would ride that momentum into the rubber match, beating Nokomis 25-21 to go home with the win.
Engelman would lead the Redskins in service points (11) and assists (13) in her return, while also contributing eight digs to the defensive effort. Her cousin, Natalie Engelman, and libero Emily Cress led Nokomis in digs with 13 apiece, while Addison Dangbar (7) and Presley Lamb (5) also contributed.
Lamb also had 10 assists in the attack, giving Nokomis 23 for the game. The kills were spread out equally between Dangbar (6), Rean Ward (6), Sabol (5), Lamb (4) and Skylar Stewart (3).
In addition to Engelman’s 11 points, Dangbar and Sabol also had seven points apiece, while Lamb added six points. Lamb and Sabol also had two blocks each for the Redskins, who finished the night with a record of 2-9 going into the Montgomery County Invitational on Sept. 10-11.
