The sophomore class of the Nokomis girls basketball team garners a lot of attention, and rightfully so, but on Saturday, March 13, in the final high school basketball game of the season in Montgomery County, the day belonged to the senior Lady Redskins.
Kristen Stauder, Mia Fesser and Jayme Johnson scored 28 combined points in the Redskins’ 59-36 win over East Alton-Wood River on Saturday in Nokomis.
Stauder finished the game with 13 points to lead all scorers, while Fesser added in 12, half of which came from behind the three-point line. Johnson also hit a three for Nokomis, who led 17-3 after one and 35-16 at halftime.
Stauder helped spur the opening run, netting seven of Nokomis’ 17 points as the Oilers were limited to a Mallory Martin three in the first eight minutes.
Martin would hit two more threes in the second quarter to help her team to a 13-point frame, but Nokomis spread out 18 points between six players, with Fesser leading the way with five in the quarter.
The third quarter would be a near carbon copy of the second, with the Oilers scoring more than they did in the first, but not enough to cut into the lead. Nokomis took a 51-29 lead into the final frame, thanks in part to Fesser and Hailey Engelman contributing five points each in the third quarter.
With time running out, East Alton-Wood River wasn’t able to move any closer and were outscored 8-7 in the fourth by the victorious Redskins.
While Stauder and Fesser led the team with 13 and 12, Coach Brandon Engelman received contributions from up and down his line-up. Hailey Engelman joined the seniors in double digits with 11, while her cousin, Natalie Engelman was just a point off that pace with nine.
Audrey Sabol added in eight points despite some early foul trouble, while Emma Sneddon matched Jayme Johnson with three points.
The game was a fitting end for the seniors, who have dealt with the highs and lows of the last four years like champions. It was also a good note for the Redskins as a whole, who will returning a glut of talent from this year’s team.
Nokomis vs. Pana
In their game prior to Saturday’s tilt, the Lady Redskins ran into Pana, who had won three straight by an average margin of almost 22 points.
Wednesday’s game in Nokomis would go similarly for the Panthers, who defeated the Redskins 55-13.
The Panthers held Nokomis to one field goal in three of the four quarters, with Addison Dangbar getting a two in the first, Mia Fesser doing the same in the second and Kristen Stauder knocking down a deuce in the fourth.
The third quarter would be Nokomis’ most productive, with Mia Fesser hitting the Skins’ only three to give her a team-high five points, while Hailey Engelman and Audrey Sabol also hit buckets.
Still, that couldn’t stand up to Pana’s offensive output on Wednesday, as the Panthers had quarters of 14, 18, 14 and nine to collect their 12th win of the year.
The game was also senior night and while the result wasn’t what they wanted, the game did nothing to dull the contributions that Mia Fesser, Kristen Stauder and Jayme Johnson made to the Redskins’ program.
